Container Types Explained: Dry, Reefer, Flat Rack, and Open Top

Equipment & Route Planning · August 2026

Choosing the right sea container isn't just a booking detail — it shapes how safely, efficiently, and cost-effectively your cargo travels. Here's a guide to the main container types used on the India-Russia corridor.

Why Container Choice Matters

The wrong container type can mean damaged cargo, wasted space, or a shipment that simply can't be booked. Matching the container to the cargo up front avoids costly surprises once the shipment is already underway.

Standard Dry Containers

Used for general cargo, the standard Dry container is the most common and cost-effective option. It suits the vast majority of palletized and boxed goods moving between India and Russia.

High Cube Containers

High Cube containers offer extra vertical space suited to bulky but lightweight cargo. When volume rather than weight is the constraint, the additional height can make a meaningful difference in how much fits in a single box.

Reefer Containers

Reefer containers are temperature-controlled, used for pharmaceuticals, perishables, and tea or spice shipments. Precise temperature management throughout the journey is essential for these cargo categories.

Flat Rack Containers

Flat Rack containers have no sides, built for oversized or irregularly shaped cargo like machinery. They're a common choice for project cargo that won't fit through a standard container's doors or within its walls.

Open Top Containers

Open Top containers are top-loading, for tall cargo that can't fit through standard container doors. A removable tarpaulin roof allows cargo to be lowered in from above by crane.

Tank Containers

Tank containers are designed for bulk liquids and certain chemical cargo. They provide a secure, purpose-built alternative to drums or intermediate bulk containers for liquid freight.

Shipper Owned Containers (SOC)

With Shipper Owned Containers, the exporter or importer owns and controls the containers directly, offering more scheduling flexibility. This can be particularly useful for shippers with recurring routes or specialized equipment needs.

Matching Container Type to Cargo

  1. Identify the cargo's dimensions and weight
  2. Check whether it's temperature-sensitive
  3. Check whether it falls under a hazardous or DG classification
  4. Consult your forwarder on the optimal container choice
