China to the UK: Felixstowe & London Gateway Shipping Guide

Shipping Into the UK: A Separate Customs Regime

Since the UK's departure from the EU customs union, China-origin cargo destined for the UK market requires its own distinct import clearance process, separate from the EU procedures used elsewhere in this China to Europe series. Whether cargo arrives via a direct call or transships through a European hub, once it enters the UK it goes through UK customs, administered by HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) rather than any EU customs authority. This is one of the more important distinctions UK-focused importers need to build into their planning compared with shipping into continental Europe.

Felixstowe: The UK's Primary Container Gateway

Felixstowe, on England's east coast, is the UK's busiest container port and handles a substantial share of the country's containerized trade with China and the wider world. It sits on established Asia-Europe service rotations and offers good rail and road connections into London, the Midlands, and the wider English distribution network. For most UK-focused importers, Felixstowe remains the default and best-served gateway.

London Gateway: A Newer, Deep-Water Alternative

London Gateway, further up the Thames estuary, is a newer deep-water port purpose-built to handle the largest container vessels, and it has steadily grown its share of UK container traffic since opening. Its proximity to London and the South East, along with dedicated rail freight connections, makes it an attractive alternative to Felixstowe for importers whose distribution centres sit closer to London itself, and it can offer more capacity headroom during periods when Felixstowe is running congested.

Sea Freight Transit Times to the UK

Transit time from major Chinese load ports to Felixstowe or London Gateway typically runs in the region of roughly 34–44 days, reflecting the UK's position toward the end of many North Europe service rotations, after the vessel has already called at continental European ports. Some direct-call services to the UK run faster than this, while cargo transshipping through a continental hub before a feeder leg to the UK will generally run longer — this is worth clarifying with your carrier or forwarder at the time of booking rather than assuming a single UK transit time applies across all services.

FCL vs. LCL Into the UK

Both Felixstowe and London Gateway support active LCL consolidation networks for China-origin cargo, given the overall scale of UK import demand, making less-than-container-load shipping a practical option for smaller and growing importers. Full-container-load shipping remains the more cost-efficient choice at higher volumes and avoids the additional handling step at a consolidation warehouse. Given the extra step UK customs clearance can sometimes add compared with intra-EU movements, some LCL importers find it worthwhile to work with a forwarder that operates its own bonded deconsolidation facility close to the port, reducing the number of parties involved in getting cargo from vessel to final delivery.

UK Customs Clearance and Documentation

UK import clearance runs through HMRC's Customs Declaration Service (CDS), and importers need a UK EORI number — distinct from an EU EORI number, and required even for businesses that already hold one for EU trade. Beyond that, the core documentation is familiar: a commercial invoice reflecting the correct Incoterm and transaction value, a detailed packing list, the bill of lading or sea waybill, and accurate HS classification for every product line, since UK duty rates and any applicable preferential treatment depend on correct classification just as they do elsewhere. UK import VAT is charged on most goods at the point of import, though many regular importers use postponed VAT accounting to declare and reclaim it through their regular VAT return rather than paying cash at the border.

Documentation Checklist

  • Commercial invoice with correct Incoterm and transaction value
  • Packing list matching the invoice, with accurate weights and dimensions
  • Bill of lading or sea waybill from the carrier or NVOCC
  • Correct HS classification for every product line
  • UK EORI number for the importer of record

Practical Tips for Shippers

  • Register for a UK EORI number well before your first shipment. This is a separate registration from an EU EORI, and having it in place before cargo arrives avoids delays at the point of clearance.
  • Choose between Felixstowe and London Gateway based on your distribution centre's location and current congestion. When one port is running behind, the other can sometimes offer a faster path to release even if it means a longer inland leg.

RR Brothers and Logistics books China-origin sea freight into both Felixstowe and London Gateway and manages UK customs clearance separately from our EU clearance operations, giving UK-focused importers a single point of contact that understands both regimes across the wider China to Europe network.
