What Counts as Cold-Chain Cargo
Not every temperature-sensitive shipment out of China is frozen fish or fresh fruit. How a Reefer Container Actually Works
A refrigerated container ("reefer") is a standard 20ft or 40ft steel box built with an integrated refrigeration unit, insulated walls, and a T-bar or grated floor that lets cold air circulate underneath and around the cargo. Unlike a dry container, a reefer actively controls temperature rather than simply insulating against it — the unit draws power from the vessel while at sea and from generator sets ("gensets") or shore power connections while on trucks or in the yard. Reefers can typically hold a set point anywhere from deep-frozen (around -25°C) up to chilled ranges just above freezing, and some units support controlled atmosphere settings that adjust oxygen and CO2 levels for produce that continues to ripen in transit, such as bananas or avocados.
Setting and Monitoring Temperature
Getting the set point right is only half the job — the container also needs continuous monitoring so that any deviation is caught early rather than discovered on arrival. Most reefer bookings today include a data logger or telematics unit that records temperature, humidity and sometimes door-openings throughout the voyage, with the resulting report handed over at destination as proof the product stayed within range. Shippers of high-value or regulated cargo, such as pharmaceuticals, often specify real-time GPS and temperature tracking so that the forwarder or the consignee can be alerted mid-voyage if a genset fails or a unit drifts out of its set band, rather than waiting until the container is opened at the destination port.
Reefer FCL vs. Air Freight for Perishables
For most cold-chain cargo, the choice comes down to sea freight in a full-container-load (FCL) reefer versus air freight in temperature-controlled ULDs or insulated pallets. Reefer sea freight from Chinese ports typically runs in the same broad transit-time range as standard dry container sea freight to the same destination — for example, roughly 30-40 days to Northern Europe or 18-25 days to India — but at markedly lower cost per kilogram than air freight, which makes it the default choice for shelf-stable frozen or chilled goods that can tolerate several weeks in transit. Air freight remains the better fit for genuinely perishable, short-shelf-life cargo — fresh seafood, cut flowers, some pharmaceuticals — where a few days saved matters more than the higher cost per kilogram.
Packing a Reefer Correctly
Reefer performance depends heavily on how the container is packed, not just how it's set. Cargo needs to be loaded to allow air to circulate fully around and through the stack — packing too tightly, blocking the air delivery slots at the front of the unit, or stacking cartons against the side walls where cold air return channels run can create dead zones where temperature climbs even though the unit itself is working correctly. Palletized cartons generally perform better than loose-stacked boxes because they preserve consistent air gaps, and pre-cooling the cargo to its target temperature before loading — rather than expecting the reefer unit to pull warm product down to temperature during transit — meaningfully reduces the risk of spoilage.
Documentation and Customs for Perishable Cargo
Cold-chain shipments carry the same core paperwork as any export — commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading and correct HS code classification — plus category-specific documents: health certificates and phytosanitary certificates issued by Chinese inspection and quarantine authorities for food and agricultural cargo, and often a temperature/data-logger report requested by the buyer or by destination customs. Perishable and food-related imports typically draw extra scrutiny from destination authorities, whether that's Indian Customs and the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India, EU food safety border controls, or the Kenya Revenue Authority and equivalent bodies elsewhere — and missing health certification is one of the fastest ways for a cold-chain shipment to be held at the border regardless of how well the reefer itself performed.
Reefer Equipment Availability and Booking Lead Times
Reefer containers are a smaller, specialized slice of the global container fleet compared to standard dry boxes, and demand for them spikes seasonally around harvests and holiday-driven food demand. That means reefer slots can be tighter to secure than dry container space on the same route, particularly during peak export seasons or when broader container shortages are affecting the wider market. Booking reefer capacity as early as possible, and confirming both the vessel's reefer plug capacity and the trucker's genset availability at origin, avoids the scramble that can otherwise leave temperature-sensitive cargo waiting at the terminal past its ideal loading window.
