Industrial machinery, production-line equipment and heavy components regularly exceed the dimensions or weight limits of a standard dry container. When cargo is too wide, too tall, too heavy or an awkward shape to load through a standard container door, the shipment needs different equipment, different documentation, and different handling from the start — treating it as a standard container booking usually surfaces the problem only after the cargo is already at the port.
Flat Rack Containers for Oversized Loads
Flat Rack containers have no sides or roof, just a reinforced base and end walls, which allows cargo wider or longer than a standard container to be loaded from the top or side by crane. They are a common choice for machinery, vehicles, and structural components that cannot pass through a standard container's door opening.
Open Top Containers for Tall or Top-Loaded Cargo
Open Top containers keep the standard container's four walls and floor but replace the roof with a removable tarpaulin cover, allowing tall cargo to be loaded from above by crane. This makes them well suited to tall machinery or equipment that would not fit through a standard door but does not need the full open sides of a Flat Rack.
Crating and Rigging Considerations
Beyond container choice, oversized machinery typically needs export-grade crating to protect components during transit and handling, along with a rigging plan for loading and unloading — how the equipment is lifted, balanced and secured at each handling point. Weight distribution across the container and lashing points both need to be planned before the shipment is booked, not improvised at the port, and the same planning should account for how the cargo will be offloaded and moved on the receiving end, not only how it leaves the factory.
